UMPIRING; Part 1.
3/8/22
Are you interested in umpiring? Under the auspices of the Garden State Cricket League umpire’s training/seminar is held every Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, at Club Eclipse 247 Fabyan Pl, Newark NJ. Aspiring umpires and players are welcome.
Umpiring is one of the most crucial aspects in the game of cricket. Poor umpiring causes players to become disgruntled, loose interest and in some cases stop playing the sport altogether. The importance of “good” umpiring is as much an asset to the game as the performance of players on the field. I admit that no one attends a game to watch the umpires, but they can become the focus and raises the ire of players and spectators alike if they are presumed to have erred.
Being a “good” umpire is grounded not only in interpretation and application of the 42 Laws of Cricket, but also in using common sense. Umpires must be physically fit as they are required to stand for long hours in the field; their eyesight, hearing, and concentration are extremely important in the execution of their duties. Above all umpires must have integrity, be unbiased, ethical, respect the game and players.
