Wanderers Crowned T20 Champions of GSCL

Wanders Sports Club was on Sunday October 11, 2020, crowned champions of the Garden State Cricket League T20 competition, for the 2020 season. They got the better of Commonwealth Cricket Club, with an impressive team performance. Captain Owen Earle won the toss and decided that his team would bat first, a decision that seemed questionable at the start, as the openers failed to fire, due to some controlled bowling from the Commonwealth bowlers. At one stage Wanderers were strugling at 68 for 3 after 13 overs, and it was at this point that captain Owen Earle decide to take the attack to the bowlers, and it was his knock of 73 N.O, which included 5 boundaries and 5 towering sixes, and also a patient 28 from the inform Nicholas Rowe, and a quickfire 22 N.O from Carlon White, that propelled the champions to a total of 168 for 4. For Commonwealth, R Williams took 2 wickets, and 1 each for Shane Ferguson and Quason Alfred. Chasing 169 victory, Commonwealth started quite briskly, with hard hitting Quason Alfred racing to 18 off 6 balls, before he was trapped L.B.W by fast bowler Denva Passley. At this point captain David Walton came in at numer 3, and tried to steady the ship, but he quickly lost Campbell, who had his off stump uprooted by D. Heman. This dismissal brought Marvin Darlington to the crease, and along with Walton, set about building a usefull partnership. Orlando Mofford got rid of Walton and Darlington in consecutive overs, and at this point with their top batsmen in the shed, commonwealth was staring down the barrel. Big hitting Rovin Williams wasn't ready to concede and accumulated a quick 32 with some lusty hitting. However, once he departed, no other commonwealth batsman got to double figures, and found themselves short of the target at the end of the 20th over. The final score of 132 for 8, was 36 runs short of the required score. All in all, it was a very entertaing contest with Wanderers Sports Club coming out the victors. For his knock of 73 N.O, captain Owen Earle was named Finals Most Valuable Player.
The Garden State Cricket League should be commended for putting this shortened version of the 2020 season, under very trying circumsatnces, and also for the teams and players that participated.
